What are some avatars of Lord Shiva ?
So here's my answer to Lord Shiva's recognised Avatars. Please read it to know some great avatars of Lord Shiva. We all know about the avatars of Lord Vishnu but we don't know anything about Lord Shiva's avatars. So please read it.
Lord Shiva have taken many avatars till now. Its said that Lord Shiva takes avatars similar to the currents in the ocean. However here are some most famous and known powerful incarnations of Lord Shiva.
- Veerabhadra Avatar.
You might be knowing about Shree Virabhadra Bhagwaan. He was lord Shiva’s Anshavatara. The story of the avatar of Veerabhadra is:-
One day, Daksha invited all the devas in order to perform a great offering called the Ashwamedha yagna, omitting only Shiva. Sati's urge to attend the event, due to her affection towards her parents, overpowered the social etiquette of not going to an uninvited ceremony; thus, Daksha insulted her in front of his guests. Angered after hearing insults against her husband, she set herself ablaze by her inner yogāgni.
Shiva came to know about what had happened, with deep sorrow and anger, he plucked a lock from his hair and thrashed it on the ground. Both Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali were born from it. The former is believed to be the destroyer of Agnana: born with a tall, muscular body reaching the higher heavens, he was as dark as the stormy clouds, with three burning eyes and fiery hair. He also wore a garland of skulls and carried weapons. To provide him the power, Maa Adi Shakti became Bhadrakaali. He there defeated Lord Vishnu and all the Deva Army and Cut off the head of Daksha.
2. Kaal Bhairava Avatar.
Lord Kaal Bhairava is the most powerful avatar of Lord Shiva. He is known because he behaded Bramha's fifth head as it was the only head which was full of all the Taamsik Guna and some Rajasik Guna. Other all 4 heads had all Sattvik guna. This head was continuously insulting Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva as main. Lord Shiva put out one hair from his hair lock (Jata) which gave birth to Kaala Bhairava. He is the most ferocious form of Lord Shiva. However Lord Kaala Bhairava is basically a dwarf or he looks like a small boy.
Bramha didn't understood his powers and Kaala Bhairava beheaded the Taamsik head. Lord Bramha was now free of his sins and is now fully Satvik with his 4 heads. But the head of Bramha struck on the hand of Kaal Bhairava and the curse of Bramhahatya started coming to him. Shiva then ordered Kaal Bhairav to go to various places but Brāhmanahatya, the sin of beheading Brahma personified as a gory woman, followed him until he reached Varanasi where Brahma's head fell on the ground. The place is called "Kapal Mochan Teerth". He was freed of the sin of Brāhmanahatya as he entered Varanasi. Shiva then pronounced that "Kaal Bhairav" will forever be in Varanasi in order to remove sins of his disciples.
3. Bhairavas of Shaktipeeths.
All the Bhairavas of Shaktipeeths are the partial incarnations of Lord Shiva only. Lord Shiva in form of different Bhairavas protect the Shaktipeeths of devi Adi Shakti (his beloved) from evils.
4. Sharabha Avatar.
Sharabha is eight-legged and more powerful than a lion or an elephant, possessing the ability to clear a valley in one jump. The story is that after Lord Vishnu killed the Hiranyakashyapu in his Narsimmha Avatar. After he killed Hiranyakashyapu in very much anger, hye was not able to cool down. His wrath threatened the world. At the behest of the gods, Shiva sent Virabhadra to tackle Narasimha. When that failed, Shiva manifested as Sharabha.
Sharabha then attacked Narasimha and immobilized him. He thus quelled Narasimha's terrifying rage. He made Lord Narsimmha cool down and let him return to his original Narayana swaroop from which the whole Universe gets benefit.
5. Vrishabha Avatar.
The Sisters of Maa Lakshmi who were in patal loka did penance to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu came to them and those beauties asked Lord Vishnu to be their husband and forget all his pasts till they remind him. As we know, Shriman Narayana is bhaktavatsala so he gave them this boon. During his stay in the Patal Lok, many sons were born to Lord Vishnu, who were very wicked and cruel. These sons of lord Vishnu started tormenting the inhabitants of all the three worlds. Maa Lakshmi requested Maa Paravati and Mahadeva to bring Lord Vishnu back. Lord Shiva got agreed on it. All the deities and sages too requested it. Lord Shiva went to the Patal Lok in the form of an Ox (Vrishabh). He killed all the sons of lord Vishnu with his sharp horns and gave them Moksha. Seeing the death of his sons, Lord Vishnu came forward to fight him. He attacked lord Shiva, but lord Shiva couldn’t be conquered. Both of them got tied into their Paasha and cannot get out of it. Lord Ganesha then requested The Sapta Sundaris of Patal Loka to let Lord Vishnu remember all his past and free Lord Vishnu from the bandhan (knot) of their Vardaan(boon). Ultimately lord Vishnu was able to recognise Lord Shiva and returned back to his heavenly abode Vishnuloka Vaikuntha.
6. Lord Hanuman.
Lord Hanuman is the most famous and lovely avatar of Lord Shiva. He is known as Rudravatar of Lord Shiva. Everyone knows about him and his divine bhakti towards Lord Rama. He is also known as Anjaneya. He is along the main characters of Ramayana and a whole Kaand of Ramayana is denoted to him only dealing with his childhood till he met Shri Rama. Lord Shiva especially took this avatar to do Bhakti of Lord Vishnu in his Ramavatar. Like Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Lord Parshurama to do bhakti of Lord Shiva. He is the most worshipped deity of India and is the swaroop of Niswaarth Bhakti. He is Lord Shiva's most powerful, famous, lovely and…….. (Infinite things) avatar. Jai Hanuman.
Thank you 😊
