Who is God in Vedas ?
The whole post of mine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the credit of this answer goes to Lord Vishnu on whose inspiration today I am writing it. This answer of mine has obviously Suddha Adwaita Shaiva Siddhanta point of view with glorification of my Ishta. I am too a dikshit Shaivite who believes in Suddha Adwaita Shaiva Siddhanta !!!!!!
Note :- This answer of mine can be seen somewhat sectarian but that's only to prove Shiva Shakti ‘s supremacy and bursting myths related to my Gauri Hara. This answer is only for those who believes that Shiva and Shakti are supreme and Adwaitam of Shaivism and Smarthism is true. As I have seen many foolish people writing that “Shiva is not in Vedas and is not mentioned in Vedic literature and he is a demigod” and many other type foolish and idiotic things which is actually Non-Vedic and un-divine in nature. The one who can't see Shiva Shakti as supreme and are Intolerant towards Shaivism, please don't read even a single word of this answer.
Finally I thought to write this answer after taking darshan of My Hanuman ji and Shri Hari Narayana as now seeing people forgetting Lord Shiva and Maa Shakti every time I am glorifying them. For us Shakti is Uma who we accept as Tripur Sundari, Kali, Durga, etc. all are she the supreme mother only.
According to Vedas supreme God is Lord Shiva and supreme Goddess is Maa Shakti. Vedas have numerous references to it. First of all I make sure that my answer will be from Vedas and some Upanishads. All say Shiva and Shakti are the most supreme. Though there are many many references but I will put here only some as to make answer readable and not more long.
Let us see some references from Rig Veda :-
OM tryambakam yajàmahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam,
urvàrukamiva bandhanàn mrityormokshiya maamrità !!!!
I bow down to that three-eyed Lord Siva, who is full of sweet fragrance, who nourishes the human beings. May He free me from the bondage of Samsara and death, just as a ripened cucumber fruit is separated from the creeper. May I be fixed in Immortality!
This is from Rig Veda (7.59.12). This sukta is addressed to Lord Shiva as Tryambaka which means "The Three-eyed One", which is an epithet of supreme Lord Rudra Shiva . In whole Vedas, Vedic Rishis asked Lord Shiva only for liberation and salvation and not to any other God. Hence this myth that Lord Shiva can’t give Moksham is refuted by Vedas and even Rig-Veda. Moksham is granted by Lord Shiva only.
Now let’s see another verse from Rig Veda (2.33.9) claiming Lord Shiva as supreme God.
।Sthirebhirangai pururoop ugro babhruvah sukrebhi pipise hiranyae
Ishaan-dasya bhuvansya bhurerna vaa uyoshadu-rudra-suryam !!!!!
With firm limbs, multiform, the strong, the tawny adorns himself with bright gold decorations. The strength of Godhead never departs from Rudra, him who is Sovran (basically telling Sun or energy source) of this universe, the mighty.
Even in Rig Veda’s shloka no. (6:49:10), its written that :-
“Rudra by day, Rudra at night we honour with these our songs, the Universe's Father. Him great and lofty, blissful, undecaying let us call specially as the Sage impels us.”
Then in Rig Veda’s shloka no. (7:46:1) again its written that :-
“To Rudra bring these songs, whose bow is firm and strong, the self-dependent God with swiftly-flying shafts,The Wise, the Conqueror whom none may overcome, armed with sharp-pointed weapons: may he hear our call.”
Here Rudra is referred as God who is self dependent and none can overcome Rudra. Hence the myth that Lord Shiva derives his strength from Lord Vishnu or any other god is refuted here again. He is self supreme Brahman.
Hence again here Lord Shiva is proclaimed as supreme God who himself is the source of all energies.
Now coming to Maa Uma references so let us see the Devi Suktam. It may help directly by its beautiful verses that every Shaivites feels so blessed and divine after chanting it that no one can imagine also.
Om Aham Rudrebhirvasubhiscaramyahama Dityairuta Visvade Vaih |
Aham Mitravarunobha Bi Bharmyahami Ndragni Ahamasvinobha ||1||Om ! I move along with the Rudras, Vasus, Adithas and all other Devas. I bear the Mithra, Varuna, Indra, Agni and the two Ashwini Devas.

When we read here the suktam, we get that Devi is the supreme most goddess but then the question arises which Devi ?
So according to the Shaastras, Tantroktam Devi Suktam is the further explanation of Rig Vedyam Devi Suktam. So now let's see what Tantroktam Devi Suktam explains about Rig Vedyam Devi Suktam.
Namo devyai mahadevyai sivayai satatam namaha I
Namaha prakrityai bhadrayai niyataah pranatah sma taam.Salutations to that Devi who is Mahadevi Shivaa (supreme auspicious) , who is supreme, I bow the energy of Infinite Devi !!!!!
We prostrate, with hands together, to that supreme mother (Devi) who becomes Prakriti (Nature), and I bow again to the supreme excellent one !!!!!
Roudrayai namo nityayi gouryayai dhatrayai namo namaha
Jyothsnayayai chendurupinyayai sukhayayai satatam namaha. (2)We bow to the great goddess who is Reliever of Sufferings ( Ruadrai or bascially to Devi Rudrani ) , to the eternal, to the embodiment of rays of light (Gauryayi or basically to Devi Gauri)
We continually bow to the Goddess who manifests light, to the form of devotion, to Happiness.
So you may notice here, each and every word is referred to Maa Adi Shakti Uma only. Different names of her and even the name Shivaa is used first only. Shivaa name itself signifies that she is wife of Shiva and we all know Maa Uma is basically called as Shivaa only. Other names like Gauri, Rudrayi or Rudrani are also told here. In next verses Maa Shakti is called by her different names like Durga, Mahamaya and many other names.
Now coming to Yajur Veda :-
It seems that whole Yajur Veda is especially written to worship Lord Shiva only. It prays to Hara in such an exclusive way that Shiva may get pleased very easily. So let us start the references in it.
Now here in Yajur Veda a whole section, Shri Rudram is dedicated to Lord Shiva only. The divine chants of Shri Rudram is done in every Shiva temple around the world. Shri Rudram or Rudri-Paath is a very different and highly divine chant of Lord Shiva. So let us see some references from it too :-
It starts with :- Om Namo Bhagwate Rudraye.
Vedas very rarely use the word ‘bhagavath’, this word cannot be used to address demigods. The word Bhagwat means someone highest among gods (devas) Or supreme God. Even Vishnu is not addressed with this ‘Bhagavath’ shabdh in Vedas. Though Lord Shri Hari Vishnu is called as Brahman which is a synonym of the word Bhagwath. Hence people calling Lord Shiva as demigod is refuted by Vedas.
Now a doubt may arise that what about the mantra :- Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya ? So basically its a Tantrik and Puranic mantra. It comes from Vaishnava Agamas (Pancharatras) and Vaishnava Puranas. One neutral Agama Shri Sharda Tilak Tantra sometimes referred as a Shaiva Agama too also refers about this mantra without actually mentioning it.
From this I am not challenging the supremacy of this mantra, rather I am telling those people who always tell that “Shaivam follows Tantras which are non-vedic and false”, then they must not chant this mantra too because it comes from Tantras or Agamas.
No seeing some references from Shri Rudram :-
ōm namaste rudra manyava utota iṣave namaḥ,
namaste astu dhanvane bāhubhyāmuta te namaḥ.Prostration to Thee, Rudra; prostration to Thy wrath and Thy arrow (which destroy evil); prostration to Thy bow; prostration to Thy mighty Arms.
yā ta iṣuḥ śivatamā śivaṁ babhūva te dhanuḥ,
śivā śaravyā yā tava tayā no rudra mṛḍaya. This, Thy arrow that has become exceedingly peaceful (to the devout); Thy bow become a source of auspiciousness, and Thy quiver of blessedness; with these, O Valiant One (Rudra), make us happy.
yā te rudra śivā tanūraghorā'pāpakāśinī,
tayā nastanuvā śantamayā giriśaṁtābhicākaśīhi.Rudra! That blessed and benign form of Thine, which obliterates the trace of all sins—with that most hallowed and calm phase of Thy being, reveal Thyself to us, O Radiator of Peace from the Mount of Kailasa
yāmiṣuṁ giriśaṁta haste bibharṣyastave,
śivāṁ giritra tāṁ kuru mā higṁsīḥ puruṣaṁ jagat.O Benefactor from the Mount of Kailasa! That arrow which Thou wieldest for aiming at enemies, make that benign (in respect of us). Harm not human beings or others in creation, O Protector on the sacred Mount (here refers to Universe)
Even this first Anuvaka ends telling :-
“Namasteastu-bhavagan-vishvesvaraya-mahadevayatriyambakaya triupurantakaya trikalagni kalaya kalaagni Rudraya Nilakanthaya-mrutyunjayaya-sarveshvaraya-sadashivayaSriman mahadevaya Namah”
Oh Lord , salutations to you !!!!!!
Oh Lord of the Universe (Vishwesaraya) , Greatest of them all (Mahadevaya) He who has three eyes ( Triambakaya) (eye of omniscience), he who gives enlightenment which is beyond three (Astral, Physical & Causal) worlds (Tripurantakaya) ,
He who like fire, devours all three times (Past, Present, Future) within himself (Trikaalagni kaalaya) Like Time, he who ends everything, The one who has blue throat ( Neelakanthaya) , He who has conquered Yama the Lord of Death and Time (Mrutyunjayaya)
Lord of all beings and everything ( Sarveshvaraya), Consciousness which is untouched by the Universe yet everything in the Universe is because of him (Sadashivaya) .Oh great Lord, salutations to you (Shriman Mahadevaya Namah)
You know namaskara mantra ? It is also a part of Shri Rudram in Anuvaka 8 Here is it :-

Namah somaya Cha rudraya Cha

Cha namo agrevadhaya Cha dure vadhaya cha namo hantre
Cha haniyase Cha,namo vrukshebhyo harikeshebhyo

Cha mayaskaraya cha namah shivaya Cha shivataraya cha !!!!
Salutation to Rudra who is Soma
who is the redness of the rising Sun, and to the rosy hue of the Sun which has risen.
Salutation to the God (Rudra) who is the giver of weal, and to the lord of knowledge.
Salutation to the God (Rudra) who is dread, and to the terrible.
Salutation to God (Rudra) who is him who slays in front, and to him who slays at a distance.
Salutation to the God (Rudra) who is slayer, and to the special slayer {at the time of deluge).
Salutation to the God (Rudra) who is trees with green tresses.
Salutation to the God (Rudra) who is deliverer. Salutation to the source of peace and who is originated by himself (Sambhave)
Salutation to the God (Rudra) who being Shankar and creates peace and is the creator of delight
Salutation to the God (Rudra) who is also called as Shiva and being it is the most auspicious and more then auspiciousness, he is absolute.
So what it basically saying Lord Rudra i.e. Lord Shiva is the supreme being of all and is source of each and everything and is present in each and everything. There is nothing where he is not present. This is particularly a quality of Supreme God and hence Vedas again salute Lord Shiva as the supreme personality of Godhead !
Some people often say that ‘Linga’ worship is non-vedic or avaidik etc. etc. but it is perfectly Vedic and its even said in Taittariya Aranyaka of Yajur Veda and as here are some mantras which often gives its references :-

bhavaaya namah bhavalingaaya namah,
sarvaaya namah sarvalingaaya namah,
shivaaya namah shivalingaaya namah,
jvalaaya namah jvalaalingaaya namah,
aatmaaya namah aatmalingaaya namah,
paramaaya namah paramalingaaya nama,
etathsomasya suryasya sarvalingam sthaapayate paanimantram pavetram
Salutations to the god Shiva and its linga (symbol) who is supreme existence,
Salutations to the god Shiva and its linga (symbol) who is supreme of everything,
Salutations to the god Shiva and its linga (symbol) who is supreme auspiciousness.
Salutations to the god Shiva and its linga (symbol) who is supreme fire.
Salutations to the god Shiva and its linga (symbol) who is supreme soul.
Salutations to the god Shiva and its linga (symbol) who is supreme most.
Hence we establish (sthaapna) the holy linga by worshipping that Lord who is Soma and Surya and who’s mantra is the most pure.
Yajur Veda Taittariya Aranyaka (10:16:1)
This is the mantra recited during the Shivalinga Sthaapna and its from Yajur Veda. This actually signifies that Linga Worshipping is not Avaidik and neither its related to any sages’s curse. Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of Linga because he is the only God who is called as Niraakar or formless and he is the one whom Vedas call as formless Brahman i.e. Supreme God !!!!!!
Some more references from Yajur Veda :-
OM tatpurushàya vidmahe mahàdevàya dhimahi
tanno rudraþprachodayàtMay we know or realize the Supreme Person(purusha). For that, may we meditate upon Mahadeva and to that meditation may Rudra impel us.
(Yajur Veda Taittariya Aranyaka 10:20:1)
“I take refuge in Sadyojata. Verily I salute Sadyojata again and again. O Sadyojata, do not consign me to repeated birth; lead me beyond birth, into the state of bliss and liberation. I bow down to Him who is the source of transmigratory existence.” ( Yajur Veda Taittariya Aranyaka 10:17:1)
“May the Supreme who is the ruler of all knowledge, ishana, controller of all created beings, the preserver of the Vedas and the one overlord of Hiranyagarbha, be benign to me. That Sadasiva I’m described thus and denoted by Pranava.” (Yajur Veda Taittariya Aranyaka 10:21:1 )
“Supreme Brahman, the Absolute Reality, has become an androgynous Person in the form of Umamaheshvara, dark blue and reddish brown in hue, absolutely chaste and possessing uncommon eyes. Salutations to Him alone who is the Soul of the universe or whose form is the universe” (Yajur Veda Taittariya Aranyaka 10:23:1)
“All this verily is Rudra. To Rudra who is such we offer our salutation. We salute again and again that Being, Rudra, who alone is the light and the Soul of creatures. The material universe the created beings and whatever there is manifoldly and profusely created in the past and in the present in the form of the world, all that is indeed this Rudra. Salutations be to Rudra who is such “ (Yajur Veda Taittariya Aranyaka 10:24:1)
“We sing a hymn that confers on us happiness in the highest degree to Rudra who is worthy of praise, who is endowed with the highest knowledge, who rains objects to the worshippers most excellently, who is more powerful and who is dwelling in the heart. Indeed all this is Rudra. Salutations be to Rudra who is such” (Yajur Veda Taittariya Aranyaka 10:25:1)
Here were some references from Yajur Veda.
Now let us move towards Saam Veda :-
Now a story in which Maa Uma in Kena Upanishad of Sama Veda is declared as Brahman :-
“It is said that the gods became puffed up with a victory over the Asuras. They wrongly took the success to be the result of their own valour and prowess. The Lord wanted to teach them a lesson. He appeared before them in the form of a Yaksha, a huge form, the beginning and end of which were not visible. The Devas wanted to find out the identity of this form and sent Agni for this purpose.
The Yaksha asked Agni: “What is your name and power?” Agni replied: “I am Agni (Jatavedas). I can burn up the whole universe in a minute.” The Yaksha placed before Agni a dry blade of grass and asked him to burn it. Agni was nor able to burn it. He ran away from the Yaksha in shame.
The gods then sent Vayu to enquire who the Yaksha was. Vayu approached the Yaksha. The Yaksha said to Vayu: “Who are you? What is your power?” Vayu said: “I am wind-god. I can blow up the whole world in a minute.” The Yaksha then placed a blade of grass before Vayu and told him to blow that away. Vayu could not make it move an inch from its place. He left the place in shame. Last of all came Indra himself.
When Indra reached the place, he found that the Yaksha had vanished.
Then Maa Uma appeared before Indra and revealed to him the real identity of the Yaksha. She said to Indra: "It is, indeed, Brahman. Through the victory of Brahman alone have you attained glory." After that Indra understood that It was Brahman.
Since they approached very near Brahman and were the first to know that It was Brahman, these devas, namely, Agni, Vayu and Indra, excelled the other gods. Since Indra approached Brahman nearest and since he was the first to know that It was Brahman, Indra excelled the other gods.”
Basically this story proves both Maa Uma and Lord Shiva as the supreme personality of God-head and have no none above them. Yes, the supremacy of both Shiva & Shivaa is established which cannot be challenged by non-vedic and self-imagined local books which now some less-knowledge people say that its written or spelled by some deities.
Now Let us move towards Atharva-Veda:-
। [Atharva Veda 15:1]
There was Vratya . He roused Prajapati to action. Prajapati beheld gold in himself and engendered it. That became unique, that became distinguished, that became great, that became excellent, that became Brahman, that became Tapas, that became Truth: through that he (Vratya) was born. He grew, he became great, he became Mahadeva. He gained the lordship of the Gods. He became Ishana. He became Eka Vratya. He held a bow, even that Bow of Indra. His belly is dark-blue, his back is red (Nila Lolita). With dark-blue he envelops a detested rival, with red he pierces the man who hates him: so the knowers of Brahman say.
Salutations in the morning, salutations in night and Salutations in the day. To Bhava and Sarva salutations through our hands.
So here also you may have noticed the names of Lord Shiva are mentioned and hence glorified as supreme God. Even though you may see and think “This may be some references to Lord Shiva, but as high, most of them are referred to different other gods only na”
So again I would love to clear your doubt by this by sharing these shlokas of Satapatha Brahmana of Yajur Veda from 6.1.3.10 to 6.1.3.17 :-
“Rudra is Agni.
Sarva is Water (Varuna).
Pasupati is Plants (Vanaspati).
Ugra is Air (Vayu).
Asani is Lightening.
Bhava is Raingod (Parjanya).
Mahadeva is Moon (Chandra/Soma/Mind).
Ishana is Sun (Surya/ Atman)”Satapatha Brahmana of Yajur Veda from( 6.1.3.10 to 6.1.3.17)
Here it's another reference from Atharva Veda :-
“sahasrākṣáu vr̥trahánā huveháṃ dūrégavyūtī stuvánn may ugráu |
yā́v asyéśathe dvipádo yáu cátuṣpadas táu no muñcatam áṃhasaḥ ||”(Atharva Veda 4:28:03)
“The thousand-eyed slayers of Vritra both do I invoke. I go praising the two strong gods (ugrau) whose pastures extend far. Ye who rule all these two-footed and four-footed creatures [Pasupati], deliver us from grief a
nd trouble”.
Even the Rudrahridaya Upanishad of Yajur Veda proclaims the same thing which are earlier told in Satapatha Brahmana of Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda (4:28:03). See this :-

Hence Vedas glorify Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati a lot. Each and every time either in the name of Agni, Indra or Vaayu or etc. they are actually glorifying Hara and Himavati only. Always believe in Shiva Shakti. They are the supreme most and are the supreme personality of Godhead which cannot be taken. They are not any demi/semi god. Only people with Avaidik knowledge and Aasuri-privrti can tell such disgusting words.
They are supreme, either you believe or not. Supreme Truth cannot be changed by once belief. Their are billions of beliefs in Billions of people. But the supreme truth is one who is my Shakti Hara !!!!!!!!!!
Hope it helps !!!!!!!
