According to Hinduism, can Lord Vishnu change the sufferings or bad luck which is written in our destiny? If no, then why & if yes, then exactly what should we do to please him ?
All the sufferings you will have is not written by Shri Hari Narayana, he do no interferes in the matter of Karma (work) and Phal (result). The sufferings you are getting is because of your previous Karmas. What I have seen in my life, I can tell that only because more than anything, I believe on my Atma-Gyaan (self realization). I have a very bad habit (as described by some very intelligent people here) that I start relating Shastras with each other and try to take out the conclusion. So here my answers will be from my self realization and from the shastras which I have read. And yes as the questions asked me the specific pooja/worship for Shri Hari so I will also give a brief about it in end.
Lord Vishnu says in Bhagwad Gita :-
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि
Karmanye vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana,
Ma Karmaphalaheturbhurma Te Sangostvakarmani
Your right is to perform your work, but never to the results, its my right to give results. Never be motivated by the results of your actions, nor should you be attached to not performing your prescribed duties.
:- Bhagwad Gita, Chapter 2, verse 47
So Lord Krishna simply says that we have no control on our results, it he who have all the control. So Lord Vishnu in reality never interfere in the karmas. You will be going to get your Karmafal (result of your works) that’s sure But !!!!!
Shriman Narayana can change the fate of your Karmas.
Like your some previous karma is going to affect you on a wrong time, take example that now you are going for a job interview and your previous karmas result is to give you an accident with a great loss of yours. Now worshiping Shri Hari Vishnu and singing glories of him and Maa Lakshmi, they can divide the results of your previous karmas into small effects and hence their combine effect will be not their. Shri Hari is Bhakta-Vatsala !!!!!!
You know Gajendra Moksham ?
There was once an elephant named Gajendra who lived in a garden called Ṛtumat which was created by Varuna. This garden was located on Mount Trikuta, the "Three-Peaked Mountain." Gajendra ruled over all the other elephants in the herd. One day as usual he went to the lake near by to pick lotus flowers to offer prayer to Lord Vishnu. Suddenly, a crocodile living in the lake attacked Gajendra and caught him by the leg. Gajendra tried for a long time to escape from the crocodile's clutches. All his family members, relatives and friends gathered around to help him, but in vain. The crocodile simply would not let go. When they realised that ‘death’ had come close to Gajendra, they left him alone. He trumpeted in pain and helplessness until he was hoarse. As the struggle was seemingly endless and when he had spent his last drop of energy, Gajendra called to the god Vishnu to save him, holding a lotus up in the air as an offering.
Hearing his devotee's call and prayer, Vishnu rushed to the scene. As Gajendra sighted the god coming, he lifted a lotus with his trunk. Seeing this, Vishnu was pleased and with his Sudharshana Chakra, he decapitated the crocodile. Gajendra prostrated himself before the god. Vishnu informed Gajendra that he, in one of his previous births, had been the celebrated King Indradyumna, a devotee of Vishnu, but due to his disrespect to the great Sage Agastya, he had been cursed to be reborn as an elephant.
So coming to the next question, can Lord Vishnu save us from sufferings, so answer is Yes, He can. Lord Vishnu gives you sufferings only and only when required. Otherwise he always saves you.
Now how can I say this ? Answer is the stories of Lord I am heavily attached to, i.e. Satya Narayan Vrat Katha which comes from Skanda Purana.
Now in it, in the story of the Vaishya Saadhu and his son in law, the Vaishya Saadhu didn’t did the Satya Narayan Vrat and Puja even after promising Lord Vishnu many times. This showed his quality of laziness and a particular quality was taking birth in him which can be described as one who never fulfills promises and always cheats.
So Lord gave him a good punishment by sending him and his son in law both to jail in the case of robbery, though they didn’t did. Because of this his family was also in a very great problem. The wife of Vaishya Saadhu was very much sad because of her current situation. The young girl of that Saadhu saw Satya Narayana Puja at a house of a Brahmin. She then told this to her mother and then they all did the Satya Narayan Puja. At that night, Lord Shriman Narayana came in the dream of that King who have arrested that Vaishya Saadhu and his son in law, Lord Vishnu addresed him that if he don’t leave those Vaishya Saadhu and his son in law, he (Lord) will destroy all his wealth and kingdom. The King waked up in fear and suddenly announced for the court meeting (darbaar). He next day in early morning only odered his jailor to free them and take them to darbaar with full respect. His order was followed suddenly and those Saadhu Vaishya and his son in law were given royal clothes and jewelries for them and full family and lots and lots of wealth. The king and the queen asked sorry for this behavior (taking them to jail).
However again Lord Vishnu came to him by taking a roop (form) of a Vriddh Dandi Sanyaasi (Old Dandi Sanyaasi) when they were putting all their wealth in their own boat to their home to test the truthfulness of the Saadhu. Lord asked them “Oh dear ! What’s their in your boat ?” He told “Nothing Sir, I have only grass and woods” Lord seeing the cunning-ness of that Saadhu and his son in law, told “May you get what you told and may your words become the truth” and hence when they saw their wealth, instead of gold coins, royal clothes, jewelries, costly gemstones, etc, only and only grass and woods were there. That Saadhu Vaishsya seeing this became unconscious and his son in law make him agin to become conscioused. He asked his father in law to go and ask that Sanyaasi for forgiveness and hence both of them went to him and asked for forgiveness. Lord Vishnu in the form of Sanyaasi told them to do the Satya Narayan Puja and hence they will get all their wealth again. That Saadhu got to know that each and every time he promised Lord Maha Vishnu that he will do their puja but never did. So he fulfilled his wish and gave all his wealth.
Hence by this story too we get to know that Shri Hari always takes care of his devotees but do test them and gives them true punishment for their wrong deeds and that’s only and only so that Lord’s devotees be initiated towards Moksham.
Even we find some references from Shri Vishnu Stotram too which is from Shri Vishnu Purana :-
समस्ता कर्म भोक्ता च कर्मोपकारणानि च
त्वमेव विष्णो सर्वानि सर्वकर्मफलमश्च यत्Samasta karma bhoktaa cha karmopakaranaanicha
Twameva Vishno Sarvaani Sarvakarmaphalamcha yat
All the Karmas are relieved by you and you alone are their giver
and you Lord Vishnu, you alone is the giver of results of all Karmas !
By this shloka it says Lord Vishnu is the giver of the results of the all Karmas.
नमो ब्रह्मण्यदेवाय गोब्राह्मणहिताय च ।
जगद्धिताय कृष्णाय गोविन्दाय नमो नमः ॥२॥Namo Brahmanya devaaya Gau Brahmana Hitaayacha,
Jagaddhitaaya Krishnaaya Govindaaya namo Namah !!!!!
Salutations to the deva (god) who is Brahman himself, who is the well wisher of cattle and Brahmins.
Oh Lord who is the sun of the world, who is bluish black in color and who is protector of Vedas, all salutations to you.
Here the word Brahmin means all the people who are learnt and good.
Another reference from Bramhanda Purana is :-
जनार्दनः पद्मनाभो , वेंकटचल वासनाः
सृष्टिकर्ता , जगन्नाथो , माधवो , भक्त-वत्सलाः
Janardhanah , padmanabho , venkatachala vasanah,
Srishti Karta , jagannatho, Maadhavo, Bhakta vathsalah
Oh Lord who is Janardhana i.e. the one who removes ignorance in people, who is Padmanabha i.e. one with a lotus on his belly as well as whose appearance is like lotus, who is venkatachala vasanah i.e. One who lives in the great Venkatachala hill, who is Srushti Kartha i.e. who is the creator, who is jagannatho i.e. who is the Lord of the universe, who is Maadhva i.e. who is husband of goddess of fortune(Maa Sri Lakshmi) and who is Bhaktha vathsalah i.e. one who is dear to his devotees.
Hence this verse again proves that Lord Vishnu is also Bhakta Vatsala and also the giver of good fortune. We all know How Shriman Narayana in his form of Lord Shri Krishna saved the people of Vrindaavan from the warth of Lord Indra who become angry because of no offering was done to him that year by holding a hole hill i.e. Govardhan Parvat on his one tip of smallest finger of his right hand. This too shows how Bhakta-Vatsala my Lord Shri Hari Vishnu is !!!!!
You know Kewat ? Who did bhakti of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu in his form of Lord Shri Ram by washing his feets ? who had taken Lord Ram, Maa Sita and Lord Lakshman in his boat and crossed the River Ganga at the time of exile. This story is described in Ayodhya Kanda of Ramayana. Kewat was an exclusive devotee of Lord Sri Ramachandra. Then he was delivered from the cycle of birth and death just because of this little service done unto the Supreme Lord Vishnu !!!!! He also asked Lord for endless devotion to lotus feet of Lord Rama !!!!!
Now moving to the next question that which worship should we do to please him, so the answer is their are many many ways of worshiping him but the way which is near and dear to me and is also very very much effective and is and by Lord Shri Hari Narayan only is Shri Satya Narayan Puja.
Lord Shri Hari Vishnu can be easily pleased by bhakti only and our good behavior. He don’t need materialistic things for getting pleased as some foolish people say. However as doing Homams, Katha and other ways of worship do have their physical and spiritual significance. So doing that also is a very good way to make him happy.
The most simple and best puja to do is Shri Satya Narayan puja on every month Punarmaasi (Purnima) and to do Brihaspativaar vrat katha on every Thursday. Atleast once a year do Maha Satya Narayan Katha and Puja. Ask some people to come and listen it and ask a Pandit do the the katha. The Satya Naryana Katha comes from Skanda Maha Purana. Tie Banana leaves around the place where you have done the sthaapna of Lakshmi Narayana. Offer him Chana (gram pulse) and Guda (Jaggery). He will definetly get pleased as he is always in his prasaanamurthi (always happy form).
Hope it helps !!!!!!
Dhanyawaadam !!!!!!
Jay Lakshmi Narayana !!!!!!!
